Good News and Toddler Antics

Kacey and I stopped by the HR department to get a look at the room set aside for nursing while we were attending to other errands at UVU a couple days ago. Quite fortunately, we actually ran into the Student HR Representative that I e-mailed in the first place, and had a pretty good conversation with her.

It turns out that there has been a lot of bureaucracy involved in figuring out the issue, and that this was compounded by the fact that they thought I needed a location in which to PUMP, not to actually nurse a child.  It's good anyway, though, because it is pushing them to find locations for nursing/pumping rooms that other women may need, though I don't.  When I asked directly, "Is there a difference in me nursing my child as a student or just a woman that happens to be in the library versus me nursing my child while on break from work?" she told me that she couldn't see any reason for there to be.  This is not a definitive answer, mind you, but it gives me some ground to stand on with my supervisors (several of whom feel that I should be hidden away when nursing).

If, for whatever reason, they insist that I must go to a special room to nurse/pump, I would need to be on the clock for the travel time which would result in my break being up to 45 minutes long, total, unless a room is found in the library.  Frankly, I don't believe they CAN insist on me going to any room, legally.  It doesn't sound like the school is going to try and argue that.

I have been progressively nursing Rylan less and less, since realizing it makes my morning sickness worse.  If he asks when I already feel unwell I tell him I can't, but if I have eaten recently and feel fine, we do nurse.   Nursing right before bed or during the night is completely off limits. This has ultimately led to more bonding time with Kacey, but also a willingness to settle for cuddling up against me.

Fortunately, nursing is not Rylan's entire life.  He loves yogurt, cottage cheese, cheddar cheese and fruit.  He begs grandpa for some of his morning toast on a daily basis.  He regularly requests water from the tap, though occasionally asks for orange juice.  He believes he is king of the Wii and sometimes gets upset when we turn on something other than Yo Gabba Gabba.

Last night while we were visiting a friend he used a PS3 controller to turn off the system, and when our friend noticed, Rylan said, "I did that!" I am more amazed at his grammar than I am his ability with electronics, frankly.

  1. Yay for the good news! And good luck with the morning sickness. I don't envy you with that. And can I say Yo Gabba Gabba makes me crazy? It does. I don't get htat show at all!

  2. It turns out I've been counting my weeks by my date of conception, so my morning sickness should actually end next week (12 weeks) if this pregnancy follows the last one's pattern. Yo Gabba Gabba is tolerable to me because it draws on my childhood AND my adulthood--vintage video games, contemporary actors and musical groups, etc. I also like some of the songs, like "Party in my Tummy" and "Don't Bite Your Friends."

But after watching it over and over again, it's one of those things I try to block out from whatever else I'm trying to do (usually nap).
